Fractional Laser Resurfacing Long Island
Conveniently located to serve Long Island, Middle Island, and Stony Brook
With the help of a non-invasive cosmetic skin procedure called fractional laser skin resurfacing, Long Island patients can reduce signs of aging like wrinkles, acne scars, and age spots. The treatment also tightens sagging skin for a more youthful appearance.
This type of laser resurfacing involves the use of fractional laser technology, where a laser is divided into thousands of tiny beams to target small fractions of the skin called microzones. This allows the surrounding undamaged skin to aid in the natural healing process, shortening recovery time.
Which Issues Can Be Addressed?
Fractional laser resurfacing is suitable for:
- Wrinkles and facial lines
- Sun damage
- Drooping skin
- Acne scars
- Surgical scarring
The procedure can be performed to address problems on the skin of the neck, chest, and hands. It is suitable for people of all skin types.
The Science Behind Fractional Laser Resurfacing
The skin is composed of several layers. These include the outer layer, which is the epidermis, and the middle layer, known as the dermis. The dermis layer plays an important role in skin health. Collagen and elastin are types of protein fibers in this layer. These fibers keep the skin tight and youthful. With age, production of these protein fibers declines.
Fractional laser resurfacing works by creating micro-injuries in the skin using laser energy. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s healing process, increasing collagen and elastin production in the dermis. This tightens the skin and helps get rid of wrinkles and other skin issues.
How Is Fractional Laser Resurfacing Performed?
Prior to the treatment, the areas to be treated are identified as part of a consultation. Photographs are taken so that the post-treatment results can be gauged. Patients who have serious pigmentation issues or darker skin may require pre-treatment using a bleaching cream or even a chemical peel.
At the start of the treatment session, an anesthetic cream is applied to the area, and the patient needs to wait until it takes effect. The cream is then removed, and a gel is applied.
The handpiece that delivers the laser energy is lubricated by the gel. The handpiece is moved around the skin, targeting it with laser energy. It can take around 30 minutes for the entire face to be treated. The gliding gel is then removed.
Redness, itching, and swelling may be experienced after the treatment, but they are temporary and are usually mild. It is important to protect the skin using sunscreen with a proper SPF, since it will be especially prone to sun damage. Avoiding heavy sun exposure is also required during the recovery process.
New skin grows within 24 hours. It can take up to 14 days for the skin to regain a normal appearance.
Around four fractional laser skin resurfacing treatments are needed to ensure the best results. A gap of one month between treatments is recommended.
Fractional Laser Resurfacing Cost
The cost of fractional laser resurfacing varies depending on the dermatology practice you choose for your treatment. Price is affected by the size and number of treatment areas, along with the exact issues being treated.
